Electrophoresis

Third Step:

The third step in the molecular process is electrophoresisfollowing these techniques:

  • Make an agarose gel with a stain that will adhere to the DNA in order to be able to visualize your products
  • Place the gel in an electrophoresis box and load the samples into the respective wells – ladder is added which produces bands of standardized size – some master mixes will have dyes to enable you to track the progress of the samples down the gel
  • Run the samples out on the gel – fragments will migrate toward the positive end
  • Once the gel has run to the end, correct bands may be cut from the gel and then frozen
