Early-start position(s): Target start date of April 5, 2021

Hours: Full-time, 40hrs/week. Hours vary based on field work tasks to include early mornings, regular days (e.g., 0600-1600) and some nights).
Salary: 14.35-17.90/hr (Salary based on qualifications/experience) Application Deadline: Feb. 26, 2021

Major Duties:

Technicians are needed to perform terrestrial vegetation and wildlife monitoring, including occasional nighttime surveys. Technicians are expected to have working knowledge of and ability to identify plant, bird, mammal, and reptile species associated with sagebrush/grass steppe of the Great Basin. Site specific training will be provided; however, preference will be given to candidates with prior experience. Annual projects including, but are not limited to: vegetation transects; rare plant and noxious/invasive weed inventories; rodent, small mammal, and reptile inventories (including live trapping), avian surveys (migratory, sage-brush obligates, and raptors), bat surveys and others. Data entry/management and analyses using Microsoft suite. Potential for project management to include data collection/query/analysis and report writing. May also require multi-day in- state travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have at least 2 years of college coursework in biology, botany, zoology or other natural resource-related field. Exceptions can be made based on applicant’s level of nonacademic experience or other considered factors.
  • Applicant should have some experience using field equipment (e.g., compass, clinometer, maps, camera, GPS unit). Special consideration given to those with experience with ArcGIS mobile field applications.
  • Applicants must be able to collect data accurately and pay attention to detail.
  • Applicant must be able to work effectively and cooperatively with others while working in harsh conditions.
  • This position requires working outdoors, on an active military training area.

Technicians will report daily to the MATES facility on the Orchard Combat Training Center (25 miles south of Boise, ID). This position requires the physical and mental ability to work in extremely hot weather with no shade (often over 100 F), walk off-trail over uneven terrain, stand for long periods of time, bend down to look at plants on the ground and be aware of potential hazards such as badger holes, rattlesnakes and other land uses (military and recreational). The applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to safely operate 4X4 vehicles on rough dirt roads if needed.

COVID 19: While in the workplace or on IMD installations/properties, personnel are expected to maintain at least a 6 foot distance between themselves and other people. Face masks are encouraged to be worn any time, but are required for any brief, unavoidable periods of time the 6 foot distance cannot be maintained per the Governor of Idaho’s guidance, along with guidance from the Department of Defense (DOD), National Guard Bureau (NGB) and the Division of Human Resources (DHR).
