Parent & Family Association Constitution & Bylaws

Article 1 – Name

The organization will be known as the Bronco Parent & Family Association. The organization may be referred to herein as the “Association.”

Article 2 – Purpose

To provide an official and recognized voice for family members within the Boise State community and engage families in meaningful dialog, leadership, and networking opportunities. The Association encourages engagement via the giving of time, energy, and resources to support student success.

Article 3 – Membership

In order to be a member of the Bronco Parent & Family Association, parents and family members must have a student that is currently enrolled at Boise State.  The student may be of any class standing and can be a transfer or nontraditional student.

Section 1: How to become a member

  • Parents or family members listed as contacts on their student’s application to the university will automatically be opted into the Association
  • Any guest attending orientation with their student will automatically be opted into the association
  • Anyone connected to a current student at the university can opt into the Association via the Bronco Families website

  • Special event information
  • Leadership opportunities

Section 3: Membership Fees

  • There is no fee for membership.

Article 4 – Organization

Section 1:

The GENERAL ASSEMBLY consists of all members of the Association.

Section 2:

The BRONCO PARENT & FAMILY COUNCIL (herein referred to as the Council) shall plan, direct and support the purpose of the Association. The Council will be made up of Association members from diverse backgrounds, geographic locations and interests.

The COUNCIL will consist of Association members who apply online through an open application process. New Student Transition & Family Connections professional staff will select Council Members from the applicant pool.

Council Positions:

President

The COUNCIL PRESIDENT will be selected by New Student Transition & Family Connections and will serve as president for a 2 school year term. The president can serve no more than 2 school year terms. The President’s duties may include:

  • Being present at all three major events: Bronco Day, Parent & Family Weekend, Move-In Day
  • Monitoring and answer emails on bpfcouncil@boisestate.edu
  • Speaking on behalf of the council at events as needed
  • Co-running monthly council meetings
  • Frequently communicating with New Student Transition & Family Connections
  • Being the voice of the Association
  • Providing high-level strategy to the Council and Association
  • Being a mentor/consultant for the next President for the minimum duration of one semester after the completion of their 2 year term
Vice President

The COUNCIL VICE PRESIDENT will be selected by New Student Transition & Family Connections, and will serve in the role for a 2 year school term. Should the Vice President position not be filled, the Parent & Family Council can continue to function. The Vice President’s may include, but not limited to:

  • Being present at all three major events: Bronco Day, Parent & Family Weekend, and Move-In Day
  • Speaking on behalf of the council at events as needed
  • Working in collaboration with the President
  • Co-running monthly council meetings
  • Frequently communicating with New Student Transition & Family Connections
  • Engage and oversee committee chairs and overall committee progress
  • Being a mentor/consultant for the next Vice President for the minimum duration of one semester after the completion of their 2 year term
Secretary
  • Create and distribute the minutes of the meetings
  • Maintain official profiles of council members
Committee Chairs

Council members can opt to be a Committee Chair for any of the various committees outlined in Article 7. Duties of a Committee chair may include:

  • Staff and organize the committee with volunteers from the Association to meet the goals of the committee
  • Communicate committee needs to Council Vice President
  • Report committee efforts and outcomes to the council
Council Members
  • Attend regularly scheduled conference calls and meetings
  • Attend at least two in-person council meetings a school year. In person meetings include; Bronco Day, Parent & Family Weekend, Move-in/Convocation Day
  • Be a resource to other parents and family members (via phone, email, social media etc.)
  • Be a liaison between the university and the Association
  • Assist in special event planning
  • Provide assistance to various campus initiatives

Section 3:

COMMITTEES shall be appointed by the Council President and Council Vice President, with approval from Council members. Committees are outlined below in Article 5.

Section 4:

FUNDING for the Parent and Family Council comes from the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and is dispersed by New Student Transition & Family Connections. Funding supports programs and events that promote the goals of the Parent and Family Council.

Article 5 – Committees

Section 1: Standing Committees Responsibilities

Add opportunities for Association engagement

Development Committee

  • Collaborate with University Advancement on Parent & Family Giving opportunities and strategy
  • Identify priority funding opportunities for the Parent & Family Association
  • Learn to articulate university and Parent & Family Council funding priorities and make a case for support
  • Share with the Association about benefits of giving

Membership Committee

  • Coordinate outreach to current association members
  • Lead recruiting efforts for the council
  • Review and respond to all council applications

Section 2: Temporary Committees

The President and Vice President shall establish or dissolve temporary committees, with the approval of the council, to sustain functions of the Association.

 Article 6 – Elections, Appointment and Termination

Section 1:

Association members interested in a Council position can complete the application on their own accord, or individuals may nominate another parent/family member as long as they meet all of the criteria that are identified in Article 3.

Staff from New Student Transition & Family Connections (in consultation with other vested offices on campus) will review applications and determine if individuals are eligible to become a council member.

Section 2:

New Student Transition & Family Connections will select the Council President and Council Vice President. Council members may express their own interest in serving as President/Vice President or be nominated by their council members.

Section 3:

All organization positions shall serve from the date appointed until they resign or no longer have a student enrolled at Boise State; the same goes for the Council President and Council Vice President.

Section 4:

A council member may be asked to step down if he/she/they don’t meet the expectations outlined in Article 4, Section 2. Any removal of a council member must have the approval of the council President and New Student Transition & Family Connections.

Article 7 – Voting & Amendments

All future amendments to bylaws must be proposed in advance in order to give council members time to identify their stance on the proposal. All amendments must be voted on during a council meeting.  In order for an amendment to be passed, there must be a two- thirds majority vote in favor of the amendment.  Each council member will be allotted one vote.
