CAES May 2023 Newsletter

CAES HQ and BSU hosting Dr. Steven Arndt

The Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) Head Quarters in Idaho Falls, and Boise State University will host 2 separate seminars with Dr. Steven Arndt, American Nuclear Society President. At CAES HQ Dr. Arndt, will discuss the opportunities presented by new reactor designs that cut across technologies, sizes, and target applications. He will also discuss how ANS is supporting current efforts to move the industry forward, challenges with the development, licensing, and deployment of new reactors and how the ANS community can help.

Boise State University’s Nuclear Energy Club will also host Dr. Arndt on campus who will speak about the current and future prospects of the US nuclear reactor fleet.

In addition to his role as ANS President, Dr. Arndt currently serves as a Distinguished Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where his research involves advanced reactor design readiness. Previously he spent 31 years as a senior scientist with the NRC and served as a professor at the U.S. Naval Academy. Additionally, Dr. Arndt serves as an Adjunct Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee.

CAES REU Program Prepares for Kick-Off

BSU CAES is excited to welcome the CAES REU 2023 Participants to Boise, ID. They will arrive on campus on Monday, May 22nd to attend orientation and meet some of the team. They will meet with several INL staff members and some of the Project PIs. They will spend time exploring Boise State University campus and the downtown Boise area. They will then travel on to Idaho Falls on Wednesday, May 24th to begin lab training and working on their Summer Research Projects.

We’ll be posting updates throughout the Summer and are very excited for our second REU Cohort to begin!

Boise State and Oregon State researchers and students publish article in Nanoscale Journal

Congratulations to Jacob Manzi, Ariel Weltner, Tony Varghese, Nicholas McKibben, Mia Busuladzic-Begic, Dave Estrada, and Harish Subbaraman for their article in Nanoscale.

Their article, “Plasma-jet printing of colloidal thermoelectric Bi2Te3 nanoflakes for flexible energy harvesting,” was published in the Nanoscale Issu 14, 2023.
