MaCS Seed Grant Program Awards up to $5,000 each

The Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) is pleased to announce a MaCS Seed Grant Program. With support from Boise State CAES, Idaho State CAES, and the Boise State Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering, this grant program provides opportunities to staff scientists, faculty and students at CAES Consortium members to utilize the equipment and expertise in the CAES Microscopy and Characterization Suite (MaCS). We aim to promote research in all science fields, as well as increase the MaCS user base.

This grant program covers the costs of both instrument time and MaCS staff time for the awarded proposals. The goal of this sponsorship is to seed opportunities that advance the vision and mission of CAES.

Awards are open to any researcher from the CAES Consortium in any discipline. The lead PI should be a faculty member at Boise State University or Idaho State University. Co-PIs from all CAES Institutions are encouraged.

Co-PIs are encouraged from all CAES institutions.

Program Guidelines

Open to any researcher from the CAES Consortium in any discipline.

Covers the cost of instrument time and staff time at MaCS. (Charge rates are listed here*)

* New charge rates will start on October 1st, 2022.

Proposed projects should:

  1. Utilize up to two instruments and up to 1 week of time in MaCS.
  2. Obtain data for peer-reviewed papers and conference presentations, or
  3. Obtain preliminary data for full proposals to external agencies, and/or
  4. Train students/postdocs.

No deadline, researchers can submit proposals at any time of the year.

Up to two proposals per PI within one university fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

Submitted proposals will be reviewed by the MaCS Seed Program Committee on their scientific merits, feasibility and costs.

Awards are anticipated to up to $5,000, depending on the required instruments. The PI should use the posted MaCS charge rates to estimate the funds needed to complete the project, up to a maximum of $5,000. After reading the proposal, the MaCS Seed Program Committee may revise the requested amount to better reflect the actual cost, which will be the final decision on the award amount.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS (2 pages max).

  1. Cover page (1 page) — Applicant details name, contact info, department/program/school/institution.
  2. Proposal (1 – 2 pages) — Overview of research topic, background, planned samples and required instrument(s), timing, student and/or staff training requirements and anticipated outcomes.

Requirements

Awardees are required to (1) acknowledge CAES and MaCS, and include MaCS staff as a coauthor in your products if they make substantive contributions to the project as outlined in the MaCS User Guidelines and Agreements and (2) submit reports of outcomes and send copies of products (journal publications, conference proceedings), as well as information of conference presentations, seminar presentations that include data obtained at MaCS, (3) report on proposal submission which leverage the results of the seed program.

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until funding is no longer available.
