[Nicole Cornell, Manager, Chemistry Instructional Center]: Hi my name is Nicole and I am the manager of the Chemistry Instructional Center, which is a drop-in tutoring center that’s available to anyone who’s taken any chemistry classes. And so right now we’re in the Education Building in Room 107. This is where you’re gonna find the CIC, which is short for Chemistry Instructional Center. This is where you can find me and also all of these chemistry tutors here as well. When you come here what I would like you guys to do is I would like it if you take your student ID, yeah, like Emma’s doing over here, and you’re going to slide it in. And that way you are signing in. Or, if you don’t have your student ID, you can also type it in. Alright, and then when you come in you’re just gonna walk in and find a spot. Maybe you’ll find some friends, maybe you’ll find some lab partners, either way just come in and sit down and you can start working on any chemistry things that you want to work on.

The chemistry classes that we help out here are Chem 101, 102, 111, 112, 350, 307, 308, 309, 310, 211, 212, and anywhere in between. So any one of those chemistry classes you’re more than welcome to come in here and somebody is here to help you guys out. So as you can see our tutors here will be wearing lanyards so you can come in and you can identify them when they wear their lanyards, and then if you needed any help you can raise your hand and they’ll come over and help you. Or you’re more than welcome to go up and ask them for help wherever they’re at in the room. We also have some really cool model kits for organic as well as 111 for when you’re doing geometry. We also have white boards for your convenience you’re more than welcome to use those. And we also have books, lots and lots of books, and so if there’s other books that are being used you’re more than welcome to come back here and grab some of your own.

So you might be wondering why should you even come here – is there any data or anything that suggests that coming here is even helpful? Well, I have been collecting some data and I have some preliminary data that says that if you come out here on a regular basis once a week or so maybe even a little less than that depending on your needs that coming here whenever you need the help will increase your GPA in chemistry by 0.5. And so if you come here when you need the help, we’re here to help you and it will show on your grade as well. The university recognizes that international students come here where English is not their first language, so we are partnering with the Center of Global Education to help with those language barriers. The one-on-one interactions that you get here can help you with the chemistry language, because chemistry by itself can be a very difficult course and even the language within chemistry can be very difficult to understand. So while you’re here you can get some more help with that with the one-on-one interactions that you can get with these tutors. And they’d be more than happy to help you through any kind of barriers that you’re struggling with when it comes to chemistry.
