[Ed Baker, Director of the Center for Health Policy, Boise State University]: I’m Ed Baker, Director of the Center for Health Policy at Boise State University. Research matters because it provides policymakers with information and insights to make good decisions on behalf of the people of Idaho. Access to high quality, affordable health care is important to Idahoans. At the Center for Health Policy, we’re conducting research that addresses this critical issue. We’ve partnered with the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho to study how to encourage more family physicians to practice in the state’s underserved rural areas. We’ve contracted with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare to evaluate the effectiveness of insurance programs for low-income Idahoans. And with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, we’re analyzing the impact of Medicaid reforms such as program to help Idahoans stop smoking and stay healthy. The policy issues surrounding healthcare are complex and the stakes are high. A thoughtful and thorough analysis of the issues is key to charting a successful course. I’m proud to be part of Boise State University research programs that are making a difference in the daily lives of Idahoans.
