Melissa Meyer, a recent graduate of Boise State University’s Interdisciplinary Professional Studies program, authored and published an educational children’s book as part of her senior capstone project. The book, “Pink Barn Farm!,” is designed to teach young readers about digital literacy and online safety through the relatable experiences of a young girl named Piper.
In “Pink Barn Farm!,” Piper is engrossed in a popular mobile game when she begins to encounter a variety of online advertisements — featuring everything from robots to race cars. Her father, Emmett, gently guides her in recognizing these ads and explains the importance of being cautious while playing online. By the end of the story, Piper begins to understand the difference between her game and the external content vying for her attention, taking her first step toward becoming a safe and informed digital citizen.
The capstone project fulfilled Meyer’s degree requirements and served as a meaningful contribution to an ongoing conversation around digital safety for children. Through the Interdisciplinary Professional Studies program, Meyers was able to combine her interests in communication, education and digital media to produce a work that bridges academic learning with real-world impact.
Boise State’s Interdisciplinary Professional Studies program is designed for students like Meyers who seek flexible, customized learning pathways that combine multiple areas of study to meet their career and personal goals.
“Pink Barn Farm!” is currently available online and will soon be used in a series of community reading events focused on digital awareness for families.
