Magnetic materials play crucial roles in modern society from electronic cars to satellites. Current high-performance magnetic materials are primarily based on “problematic” rare-earth materials. Considering the dramatic growth of electric vehicle production, dependence on rare-earth-based magnets has become a national energy-security concern. Our goal is to replace the rare-earth-based magnets with the ones composed of more abundant elements. To achieve this goal we develop advanced mathematical models to accelerate the process of materials discovery.
Role of Participant(s):
Participant(s) will learn finite element-based tools for microstructural evolution modeling. They will receive training from graduate students in the lab. High-performing participants have the opportunity to co-author peer-reviewed journal papers produced from the work.
