Professor David Gabbard publishes new book

Book cover Silencing Ivan Illich Revisited

David Gabbard, professor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Foundational Studies, recently published the book Silencing Ivan Illich Revisited: A Foucauldian Analysis of Intellectual Exclusion.

In the book, Gabbard looks at the philosophical and symbolic forces that have marginalized philosopher and education critic Ivan Illich’s ideas in mainstream educational discourse.

Gabbard’s book is an updated take on the 1993 text Silencing Ivan Illich, which Gabbard credits as a pivotal influence on his own understanding of the evolution of schools. Influenced by Illich’s writings, Gabbard’s current research is focused on understanding compulsory schooling in society.
