Trisha Kangas: Capturing the story of Boise State Esports

When I first saw the listing for an open position at Boise State Esports I thought, writing about gaming? That’s like, my dream.

See, I’m a creative writer here at Boise State. I focus mostly on fiction and poetry and as such, I’m enamored with the wholly immersive and fundamentally creative experience that gaming brings to the table, simply like no other art form can.

In my final year of undergraduate studies, I wanted to make it my goal to challenge myself. I wanted to achieve and take part in things I previously would have never thought possible. So, over the summer I interned at a book publisher as an editor, I am continuing my position for the second year at The Arbiter newspaper as Social Media Coordinator, and I have accepted this position at Boise State Esports. I am truly honored to be here!

I hope to come away from this position with an entirely new outlook on writing, gaming, and people who are just as passionate as I am about gaming as creative expression. I want to form relationships with and better understand the hardworking people who make esports a reality—from the players, to coaches, everyone behind the scenes who keeps this ship running.

Each of us has found gaming via a totally unique life path and I think there’s something to be said for that. Although my passion for gaming is linked via creativity and writing, I think it’s people and our distinctive experiences which make a story compelling. That story within a game is what draws us to it. Likewise, our stories are what bring us together. That’s what I want to do, write about the story of esports.
