Boise State University’s First-Year Focus Initiative intentionally aligns and coordinates campus efforts to better support first-year students across Academic Affairs. We help educators focus on creating conditions to ensure that every student, both first time in college and transferring from another institution, experiences a relentless welcome during their first year and is supported to develop the confidence and academic self-efficacy they need to be successful. These efforts contribute to a goal of having all student groups return for a second year at a rate of 80%.

Experiences belonging
We support community- and relationship-building activities in and out of the classroom. We familiarize first-year students with the broader campus to help them feel connected to Boise State.
Identifies as a learner
We support students to view learning as an iterative process in which growth results from curiosity, persistence, and exploration.
Develops or hones the skills needed to succeed
We seek to normalize mistakes, encourage a growth mindset, and foster the development of essential study and time management skills to help students fully engage in the learning process.
Feels empowered to take advantage of resources
We intentionally introduce students to resources and help them understand that needing support is a normal part of the learning process.
Discovers their sense of purpose
We create opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, for students to connect their learning to their future life and career goals.
