Request for Approval of Secondary Position to a Graduate Assistantship

Graduate Assistantships, Policy 7170.4.4.10 statement regarding other employment: A GA cannot work for the university under any compensable arrangement other than the graduate assistantship during the contract period, unless approved by the Dean of the Graduate College.

Approval Form

Please submit THIS FORM to request approval from the Graduate College to work in a secondary position to your graduate assistantship. This form should be submitted by the student prior to hiring for the secondary position. Your GA supervisor and secondary position supervisor will be notified via email and will be required to agree to certain stipulations regarding your work.

Once all approvals are received, the information will be forwarded to Human Resources. You and your supervisors will be copied so that hiring steps can move forward.

Graduate students with full-time courseloads are strongly discouraged from requesting a secondary position to their primary GAship. Employers are encouraged to work with the GA’s faculty or staff sponsor to find a way to integrate the secondary position into the primary GAship workload so that the combination of both workloads doesn’t result in more than 20 hours per week worked during the fall and spring semesters. In all cases, the primary GAship sponsor must approve of any secondary position request. All secondary position requests are rigorously reviewed by the Graduate College on a case-by-case basis, and approval is not guaranteed.
