The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the United States Department of Defense (DOD), invites research proposals to identify key factors and methodologies for causing change in the culture and behavior of college student athletes, other high-risk young adult populations and the associated community at large with regard to concussion and concussion education.
The Challenge
Too often, student-athletes fail to report head injuries, or involvement in potentially concussive events, and/or return to play before they have sufficiently recovered from a concussion. This behavior can have significant short-term and long-term consequences for those individuals. The goal is to improve the effectiveness of concussion awareness education programs that are delivered to student athletes, soldiers and other at-risk populations and to convey the message that a concussion is a serious medical condition that requires appropriate treatment – just like a knee injury, eye injury, or broken bone. This Challenge seeks to fund applied scientific research that will generate an improved understanding of how to cause cultural change in target communities. In addition to benefiting athletes on the field of play, the outcomes of this program will also benefit military and civilian populations.
Funding
Participants in this Challenge vie for a maximum of ten (10) research grants for amounts ranging up to $400,000, funded by the NCAA AND DOD to conduct novel research into the mechanisms
influencing cultural change in the target population.
Deadlines
During Phase I, applicants will submit a shortened, non-confidential introduction of their Research Challenge proposal, DEADLINE IS JANUARY 29th, 2015.
Evaluations will take place between February and April of 2015.
During Phase II, the most compelling respondents from Phase I will be invited to submit a full, comprehensive proposal, upon which funding decisions will be made. Submissions by invitation will be accepted May through July 2015, with final reviews ending around October.
Grants will be awarded in November-December of 2015.
