COHS Student Services and Academic Advising Created to Better Serve Students

As part of the New College of Health Sciences Strategic plan, all College student advising services were moved so we could offer better service to all of our students. Dr. Sandra Nadelson is coordinating the new College side advising format which will grow to include additional student services over time.

All advisors are now located in a central suite in the Health Sciences Riverside (HSRV) building. A new area was created for peer advising and changes were made in the existing space. Walls were painted, new carpet put down, and furniture moved around.

Erin Colburn and Glenda Hill, health sciences advisors, welcomed Olga Salinas, from the School of Nursing,  and Anita Castello, from the dean’s office, as new occupants of HSRV suite 122.  Scott Staley, faculty and advisor for the Department of Radiologic Sciences, also works part time as a part of the new COHS advising team.

In addition to people and space changes, new work was also required of the team. This semester transfer students and freshmen are required to have an advising meeting prior to registering for the spring term. For COHS, this added several hundred student advising visits. The advising team worked hard to create and implement a plan to meet with all of these students and to help them prepare for spring registration as well as their careers in health care. Their work and progress in this advising change has been remarkable.

An open house to help acquaint people to the new advising area will be held on Tuesday, November 29 from 3-5 pm in HSRV #122. For more information about the event, please contact Dr. Sandra Nadelson at 426-4679 or Anita Castello at 426-1678.
