Two Athletic Training Students Spend Summer Interning with Professional Sports Teams

Two athletic training students are spending their summer interning with professional sports teams.

Cody Hartz, a third year student, is interning with the Boise Hawks baseball team. Rey Valdez, also a third year student, is completing his summer internship with the defending Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks.

Students will be supervised by the organizations’ athletic trainers. In the course of the internship, the students will conduct injury evaluations and perform treatments, which may include athletic therapy (rehabilitation), electrical modality selection and set up, and taping and bracing. Additionally, the students will get first hand experience working with team physicians and other healthcare providers in addition to learning about the workers compensation system in professional sports.

These internships compliment the clinical education requirements of the Athletic Training education program in the Department of Kinesiology. More specifically, these opportunities afford the students experience with healthcare operations in the professional sports environment.
