Two Athletic Training Students Awarded Prestigious National Scholarships

Two third year Athletic Training students have been awarded national scholarships.

Tyrel Nelson won the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Mark J. Smaha Scholarship for $2500. Mark Smaha is a former NATA president and vice president, the former head athletic trainer for the University of Idaho and Washington State University, and the former director of athletic medicine for Washington State. Smaha has also served as the secretary/treasurer and director/president of the northwest district of NATA and preference is given to scholarship applicants from the northwest district for Smaha’s scholarship.

Rey Valdez won the Professional Football Athletic Trainers and National Football League’s Charities Minority Scholarship. In addition to the financial scholarship of $1000, Valdez is completing his internship at the summer training camp for the Seattle Seahawks.
