World famous healthcare hero, Dr. Paul Farmer, is coming to campus on February 23, 2022 for the inaugural Carl and Jean Grosz Health Sciences Lecture.

Dr. Farmer co-founded Partners in Health, an organization dedicated to bringing the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need. You can watch the documentary, “Bending the Arc” on Netflix to watch how he and his team helped revolutionize healthcare in developing nations.

About Dr. Paul Farmer

Dr. Farmer holds an MD and PhD from Harvard University, where he is the Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine. Dr. Farmer also holds the position of co-founder and chief strategist of Partners in Health, an international non-profit organization that provides direct healthcare services and advocates for those who are sick and living in poverty.

Fun Facts:

  • Dr. Paul Farmer almost didn’t go to Harvard Medical School because he wanted to continue volunteering in Haiti.
  • Dr. Farmer has helped vulnerable communities in Haiti, Peru, Rwanda, U.S. and many more places with diseases like tuberculosis, HIV, HPV, Ebola and  COVID-19.
  • Dr. Farmer strongly believes in patient-centered care and healthcare as a human right.
  • Dr. Farmer co-founded Partners in Health, a global healthcare charity with his best friends, Ophelia Dahl and Jim Yong Kim.
  • Dr. Farmer successfully implemented healthcare systems with community health workers in resource-poor areas around the world.
  • Dr. Farmer firmly believes you must treat all aspects of a patient’s health – clean water, food, shelter, medicine, etc. in order to truly help the patient.

This workshop is designed for students by students and career and advising professionals to “Find their Why.” Inspired by the life of Paul Farmer, world renowned physician and medical anthropologist and co-founder of the global health charity Partners In Health, the workshop will introduce students to Farmer’s story, values and work. Knowing your why can help students maintain passion and inspiration in and for their field during school and throughout their careers.
