Purpose

The Division of Research is building out capacity through the Center for Advancing Research and Creative Activity, by way of hiring a Director of Research Development and a Education, Training, and Program Sustainability Manager, with senior level strategists, a data analyst, entry level coordinators and faculty liaisons under those two main positions.

Level Scope

Accountable for leading departments or major areas within a division through managers and directors. Works under broad, administrative direction with responsibility for providing strategic leadership and direction in the planning, implementing, improving, and evaluating of an administrative department and promoting operational improvements. Oversees and provides direction for budgets and operational forecasts. Makes complex, independent decisions for situations with precedent to ensure department or area within a division objectives are met.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years experience including 6 years managerial experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Senior level individual with deep research enterprise expertise, capable of leading teams, unifying teams around a common goal, and independently being successful.  The position requires an ability to work with diverse groups, embrace change, and function in a nimble fashion.  In addition this position must be capable of interfacing with program managers of major programs with our Federal sponsors (NSF, DOE, DOD, etc.).
  • Expert knowledge of grant and proposal development for funded research.
  • Expert knowledge of the federal grant writing requirements and process.
  • Strong data analysis skills.  Able to identify process problems and correct them through policy and procedures.
  • Experience in the transfer of process information throughout an organization.
  • Communication skills necessary to a variety of stakeholders across campus and beyond.
  • Skilled in interpersonal relationships, planning and communication.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communications, and public relations skills.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the AVP, Research Development must:

  • Work with Boise State research stakeholders to identify and collect research needs, respond to requests for research engagement, understand the Boise State research landscape, and identify and communicate with potential collaborators.
  • Oversee design, implementation, and sustainability of the grand challenge initiative supporting interdisciplinary research and the Universities Blueprint for success.
  • Oversee the Center for Advancing Research and Creative Activity.  Provide strategic guidance and service oversight to ensure that faculty development is robust and accessible across campus in concert with other faculty development units and programs.
  • Implement and support the DRED strategic plan and University Blueprint for Success with a focus on advancing research and scholarly activity.
  • Work actively with OSP AVP on program prioritization and continuous improvement across the Division.
  • Facilitate strategic use of The Implementation Group.  Create a strategic engagement plan/model and provide oversight and faculty/project facilitation to best use the contract resources available through TIG.
  • College Strategy and Interaction toward attaining and increasing research goals.  Work to inform and educate Deans and Research Deans of DRED initiatives, opportunities, and services, where appropriate.
  •  Facilitate the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) per policy (5040).
  • Convene and manage relationships among faculty and researchers spanning all academic disciplines in support of executive-level faculty development initiatives, with priorities set by the Vice President for Research.
  • Work closely with Center Directors/Managers, OSP AVP VPR and other cross-divisional leaders in DRED.
  • Provide advising for policies and strategic plans, to help ensure the sustainability of existing DRED services and to identify faculty priorities for future needs.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and requiring wearing hearing protection.
