To perform advanced journey level sign fabrication duties and coordinate the statewide sign program; perform related work.

Applies full range and job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs; may serve as lead; performs broad and/or focused assignments under general supervision; originality and ingenuity are often required to help establish procedures in functional area; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks.
Some knowledge of: Cost accounting, purchasing procedures, and Computer Aided Drafting Design (CADD).
Experience which demonstrates considerable knowledge in: highway sign shop operations; applying federal and state specifications and design requirements for highway sign fabrication; establishing goals, work procedures and schedules; training staff; operating a variety of sign fabrication equipment.

60% of Time the Sign Fabrication Coordinator must:
- Provides technical expertise to Sign Fabricators and makes recommendations to management on the planning, organization, and control of the statewide sign fabrication operation. Includes designing and fabricating traffic control signs. The incumbent maintains statewide sign material and equipment inventories; develops sign specifications for statewide standards; coordinates schedules for operations; develops shop standards and establishes shop safety practices; recommends purchases; submits budget requests; submits accounting and activities reports; recommends pricing structure using cost analysis to assure cost effective service; monitors costs and maintains records of special signs; prepares cost estimates for signs and services; reviews sign requests and makes recommendations on outsourcing and contract; provides input on contract development and administration; confers with vendors; and researches new equipment, materials and methods to improve services; develops and writes bid specifications for materials and service contracts; evaluates materials for compliance with contract specifications.
- Establishes production work flow and inventory control methods and plant layout patterns; establishing and overseeing preventative maintenance program; performing mechanical repairs and service on equipment; performs and oversees sign design and fabrication operations; operation and maintenance of Computer Aided Drafting Design (CADD), serigraphy and photographic development equipment; researching and testing sign fabrication materials for adequacy and cost feasibility; reviewing sign orders to determine compliance with FHWA regulations, state design standards and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) compliance; provides technical expertise on the refurbishing program for used sign blanks; overseeing material selection and quality control procedures to ensure timely completion of activities; conducting statewide field inspections of signs and determining needed improvements; providing technical assistance to other governmental agencies, district sign personnel, contractors, contracting vendors and general public statewide on sign design, fabrication, installation and sign use.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
This position is responsible for all safety procedures in the Central Sign Shop to include the appropriate disposal of hazardous waste; monitoring toxic chemicals, fumes, noise and moving machinery; and ensuring appropriate safety equipment is available and properly used. This work involves bending and stooping; occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds from floor to above-shoulder height; standing for up to 4 hours during a normal shift.
