Responsible for the enterprise computing and storage system architecture planning, hardware/software specification, hardware/software recommendations, acquisition, installation, engineering, configuration and maintenance of the Boise State University (Boise State) networked enterprise Linux and/or Windows and Nutanix AHV hyper-converged systems. Serve as Level 3 support for other system administrators. Lead a team from planning to implementation of a solution.
Recognized master in professional discipline with significant impact and influence on campus policy and program development. Establishes critical strategic and operational goals; develops and implements new products, processes, standards or operational plans to achieve strategies. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the campus; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Requires significant influence and communication with executive leadership. Problems faced are frequently complex and multidimensional, requiring broad based consideration of variables that impact multiple areas of the organization.
Bachelor’s Degree or an advanced degree and 10 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience. Prefer degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with current Red Hat Enterprise Linux and/or Microsoft server platforms as well as networking.
- Experience with providing storage solutions; NetApp Clustered Ontapp experience.
- Experience providing virtualized server platform solutions.
- Experience with virtual infrastructure operating system design and solution implementation. Must have experience with HA, DRS features.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Perl or Powershell.
- Experience with implementing enterprise backup systems.
- Experience in the planning and deployment of enterprise Server-based systems.
- Skilled in interpersonal relationships, teaching, planning and communication.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge and ability to consult with faculty, staff and department management regarding equipment for productivity and instructional uses.
- May require on-call availability and may require working outside of business hours and weekends.
60% of Time the Systems Engineer 3 must:
- Responsible for the planning and implementation of enterprise level computing and storage solutions. These solutions can be achieved either by the individual or by leading a team from planning stages to implementing the solution.
- Diagnose problems and develop a stable and reliable server platform. Have in-depth knowledge of computer hardware and various peripherals. Understand at an expert level what is going on at each level of the OSI model from the physical link to the application layer. Create operational procedures for server administration University-wide.
- Provides 3rd level support on server networking and file server operations to Boise State University Systems Engineers, System Administrators, Communication Engineers, Technical Support Specialists, Developer Analysts, Managers and Directors. Diagnose server hardware and software problems to develop and implement a workable solution.
- Take a proactive approach to monitoring platforms and services, identifying and predicting problems prior to them developing into emergencies and reporting recommendations to management. This would include monitoring for usage, data volumes, memory load, software conflicts and security.
- Plan and implement reliable backup solutions that provides data recovery of critical data in the event of system failure or disaster. Implement and test a backup plan on Servers that conform to University policy 8020: Server Administration Standards.
- Maintain current professional certification at the industry standard level or at the Boise State level of OS deployment, whichever is more appropriate to fully support the enterprise Server-based system.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
General Office – Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. General office work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
Server Equipment Maintenance – Occasionally lifting and racking (or un-racking) servers and server components weighing up to 35 pounds (NIOSH lifting limit). Occasionally working in a server control room in an environment with loud background noise.
On-Call – Requires on-call availability and may require working during non-business hours and on weekends.
May be required to travel to various locations on and off campus, possibly with overnight stays, for work, training or conferences.
Systems Engineer 4.
Additional training/education or equivalent experience, as well as business need, are required for movement into higher level jobs.
