Theatre Arts BA

  1. To demonstrate a working knowledge of the complex and collaborative theoretical and practical aspects of theatre production.
  2. To demonstrate the qualities of individual responsibility and leadership within the production process.
  3. To demonstrate the ability to apply proper techniques in dance performance and choreography.
  4. To demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary perspectives about theatre and allied arts and apply those perspectives either to an advanced research project or to theatrical production.
  5. To demonstrate critical and analytical thinking skills and the refinement of written and oral communication.
  6. To demonstrate the ability to participate in the creative production process as a designer.

Theatre Arts, Secondary Education BA

  1. To demonstrate familiarity with current Idaho state secondary teaching standards and policies.
  2. To demonstrate the skills necessary to develop instructional plans and strategies.
  3. To understand how content knowledge is applied in the classroom and rehearsal space.
  4. To demonstrate effective rehearsal organization and techniques.
  5. To demonstrate practical knowledge in various aspects of theatre management, such as developing mission statements, developing budgets and performance seasons, and basic marketing.
  6. To demonstrate fundamental theatre-content knowledge in areas such as Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, and Drama Theory.

Film and Television Arts BA, BFA

  1. Critique visual narrative in terms of character, theme, and structure.
  2. Identify historical an cultural implications of filmmaking.
  3. Explain key theories and theorists related to filmmaking.
  4. Describe the relationship between technology and filmmaking.
  5. Engage in filmmaking as a form of cultural critique.
  6. Produce effective screenplays (both narrative and documentary) in terms of character, theme, and structure.
  7. Manage large-scale productions in an efficient and effective manner.
  8. Perform all major pre-productions roles related to filmmaking (casting, pre-visualization, location scouting, and crew meetings).
  9. Perform all major production roles related to filmmaking (lighting, camera, and audio).
  10. Perform all major post-production roles related to filmmaking (editing, audio, and color correction).
  11. Identify distribution channels associated with filmmaking.

Creative Writing BA, BFA

  1. Write effectively in multiple contexts for a variety of audiences.
  2. Communicate effectively in speech, both as a speaker and a listener.
  3. Engage in effective critical inquiry by defining problems, gathering and evaluating evidence, and determining the adequacy of argumentative discourse.
  4. Think creatively about complex problems in order to produce, evaluate, and implement innovative possible solutions.
  5. Assemble, format, and present a professional portfolio of written work.
  6. Produce professional documents such as cover letters and agent queries.
  7. Submit written work for publication in appropriate journals.
  8. Receive, interpret, and use constructive criticism on creative texts in progress.
  9. Offer effective criticism

Narrative Arts BFA

  1. Write effectively in multiple contexts for a variety of audiences.
  2. Communicate effectively in speech, both as a speaker and a listener.
  3. Engage in effective critical inquiry by defining problems, gathering and evaluating evidence, and determining the adequacy of argumentative discourse.
  4. Think creatively about complex problems in order to produce, evaluate, and implement innovative possible solutions.
  5. Identify processes of script analysis and the components of plot.
  6. Write and format screenplays and stage plays.
  7. Identify the fundamental components of stage and cinema production.
  8. Assemble, format, and present a professional portfolio of written work.
  9. Produce professional documents such as cover letters and agent queries.
  10. Submit written work for publication in appropriate journals.
  11. Receive, interpret, and use constructive criticism on creative texts in progress.
  12. Offer effective criticism.

Creative Writing MFA

  1. Produce a creative thesis in their major genre that the committee determines to be of publishable quality.
  2. Be capable of placing their own creative work and the work of others within an historical context, showing suitable knowledge of literary conventions and the ability to reference other significant works in the field.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the literary traditions, critical theories, and artistic forms of their genre.
  4. Critique peer work, using appropriate vocabulary as well as workshop etiquette.
  5. Submit and publish student work in appropriate venues.
  6. Gain skills in editing and publishing and promoting literary publications.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to teach entry-level and, in some cases, upper division creative writing to undergraduates.
  8. Become instilled with the skills and habits to continue writing and submitting work for publication after graduation.
