Juneteenth is an annual celebration that takes place on June 19th to commemorate the freedom of slaves in Texas. Celebrated each year this holiday references a time when the Emancipation Proclamation reached slaves in Texas. Cities and towns all across the country hold celebrations and festivals.

The ebook On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed is a compilation of essays regarding her understanding and interpretation of Juneteenth as seen through a historic and experiential lens. It’s a wonderful book to explore including many autobiographical references.
The Black Studies Center database provides access to scholarly journals, commissioned essays by top scholars in Black Studies, indexes that cover historic events, and the Chicago Defender newspaper (1910-1975). These individual components include the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, the Black Studies Periodical database, the Chicago Defender, and the Black Literature Index, as well as the Black Abolitionist Papers.
