About Dr. Waterman
Dr. Bill Waterman serves Boise State University as Associate Professor of Tuba and Assistant Director of Athletic Bands. He is also the Associate Director of the Boise State Low Brass Camp. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Kansas, a Master of Music degree from Texas Tech University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University.
Before joining Boise State in 2019, Dr. Waterman taught at the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Michigan–Flint, the Flint Institute of Music, and Jackson College. He has also taught courses at both Michigan State University and Texas Tech University. From 2012 to 2019, he served on the summer faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan.
In the marching arts community, Dr. Waterman brings a versatile background as both a performer and educator. A two-time DCI Finalist with the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps, he has taught with the Madison Scouts and the Seattle Cascades. In addition to his brass experience, he has also marched and instructed battery percussion. As an adjudicator, arranger, and clinician, he has worked with ensembles across Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Colorado, and Idaho.
Dr. Waterman is a published author with Mountain Peak Music (Daily Routines) and has presented at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. His performance career includes a solo recital at Carnegie Hall and appearances with the Boise Philharmonic, Boise Baroque Orchestra, Gene Harris Super Band, Lansing Symphony (MI), Lubbock Symphony (TX), Big Spring Symphony (TX), Paducah Symphony (KY), and the touring Celtic Woman Orchestra. He served for nine seasons as Principal Tuba with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra.
An avid chamber musician and ensemble leader, Dr. Waterman co-founded and currently serves as Principal Conductor of the Brass Band of the Treasure Valley. He also founded and directed the West Star Brass Band (TN) and served as music director of the Capital City Brass Band (MI). Under his leadership, the CCBB earned top finishes at the NABBA and U.S. Open Brass Band Championships, including two first-place finishes and a “Best New Arrangement” award in 2013 for his setting of The Carrollton March.
He served two terms on the Board of Directors for the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA), contributing to the development and promotion of brass banding in North America. He can also be heard on two albums with the Brass Band of Central Florida.
Outside of music, Bill and his wife Lindsey enjoy grilling, sporting events, traveling, and spending time outdoors. They live in Boise with their two children, Rheya and Edward.
