Students present a healing gift to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital

Students with their Senbazuru

Last fall, Boise State students in Japanese 101 and 301 classes worked together to create a Senbazuru – a cascade of 1,000 origami paper cranes.

The Senbazuru is a traditional Japanese gift for healing, recovery, hope and peace.

The Senbazuru project has been an ongoing community service project for Boise State’s Japanese Club, said Tetsuya Ehara, a lecturer who teaches Japanese in the Department of World Languages. On Nov. 20, 2019, club members and Japanese students presented their Senbazuru to the St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital in Boise.

“Senbazuru symbolizes a pure spirit of caring for others,” said Tetsuya.  “The Boise State Japanese Club is looking forward to giving new 1,000 cranes and reaching out to our community soon.”
