Arthur Scarritt, professor in the Department of Sociology and director of the Intermountain Social Research Lab, recently published his paper “Extractive Labor: A Lethal Legacy of Racialized Colonial Rule” in the journal Critical Sociology.

Scarritt explores the lethal relationship between colonial systems and the laborers that dominate. He offers a new concept of extractive labor regimes with race and colonial elites at its heart. “This analysis therein provides new insights into the elitist nature of colonialism and the logics of elimination and racialization through which it runs,” Scarritt writes.

His research focuses on the intersections of racism, indigenous populations in Latin America and globalization.
