Online training: how to respond when students share mental health struggles

As campus approaches the busiest time of the semester, students are feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Sometimes they disclose personal struggles, including mental health challenges, to faculty that they trust. What if a student admits to having thoughts of suicide? How should employees respond?

Boise State’s interactive online training, Kognito, can help prepare faculty with the skills needed to have this type of conversation with a student.

Jenna Allen, outreach and prevention case manager in the Office of the Dean of Students, can provide information on the training as well as facilitate an in-person conversation about the topic. Interested faculty members are encouraged to contact Jenna at jennaallen1@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-1527.
