Please Touch the art!

The Keith and Catherine Stein Luminary in the Center for the Visual Arts will be many things when it opens to the public in the fall of 2021. First, a digital museum with 90 feet of touchscreen where visitors can zoom in on high-resolution images of art from around the world.

“Forget the boundaries of websites,” said Lisa Hunt, interim director.

If you want to see, simultaneously, each of the 34 paintings made by the Dutch artist Vermeer for example, you can in the Stein Luminary.

The immersive, interactive space will offer panoramic views, both augmented and virtual reality environments. Interdisciplinary collaborations have begun there already. Students in the College of Innovation and Design’s Games Interactive Media and Mobile program are creating guided educational activities for visiting school groups. Another team is working with an original music score, creating digital imagery that will correspond to the notes, and transform the Luminary into a true box of light.

Closed captions are provided in the video as well as a text transcript.
