1. Policy Purpose

To identify the process of accepting supervised academic practice hours into the DNP Program.

2. Policy Statement

Supervised Academic Hours/Credits

According to the Essentials of DNP education “a minimum of 1,000 hours of practice post-baccalaureate are required as part of a supervised academic program. Practice experiences are designed to provide systematic opportunities for feedback and reflection”.

A minimum of 500 experiential hours will be attained in the DNP program. To total the required 1,000 hours – up to 500 hours may be credited from previous supervised graduate academic practicum hours.

See the steps below for determination of these hours.

Determination Of Graduate Supervised Academic Practicum Hours

  1. This process is fully outlined in the DNP Student Portal. The student submits a “Portfolio of Hours” form” upon entry into the DNP Program and describes and/or sends official documents showing supervised academic practicum hours from prior master’s or post master’s academic courses. Documentation may include official academic records and/or letters from appropriate administration officials.
  2. The DNP Program Administration reviews the documentation submitted by the student. The number of hours accepted will be documented by the total number of prior master’s or post master’s supervised academic hours in the area of advanced nursing practice and/or applicable advanced graduate practicum study. This total, up to 500 hours, will be transferred toward the 1000 hours total needed in the DNP Program.
  3. The DNP Program will secure the necessary signatures for approval at program start and at program completion. This form will be kept in the student record at the School of Nursing and a copy will be sent to the student.
