Advanced Medical Imaging Admissions

The online Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging is divided into two distinct phases: pre-advanced medical imaging and a discipline year. You must meet the admission requirements and all required criteria for both phases. For admission into the competitive discipline year phase, your application will be evaluated subjectively and objectively against other applicants, and only the top applicants will be admitted.

Pre-Advanced Medical Imaging

As a pre-advanced medical imaging student, you will complete prerequisite courses including ethics and professionalism and secure a clinical site for your chosen discipline. (The university cannot guarantee placement with the site you secure but makes every effort to assist students in securing clinical site affiliations.)

To be considered for the pre-advanced medical imaging phase, you must:

* Students must view the webinar before connecting with a student success coach.

Advanced Medical Imaging Discipline Year

The second phase of the degree program, a discipline year, takes place in the final year of the program. You must first successfully apply and be selected for admission to the discipline year of the advanced medical imaging program, to complete discipline-specific courses and in-person clinical experiences.

To apply for the discipline year, you must:

  • Have earned a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Successfully completed or be in-progress toward successfully completing the required pre-advanced medical imaging courses.
  • Have secured a clinical site before the discipline year/program application deadline.
  • Hold an ARRT (R) imaging credential if you are pursuing the interventional radiology discipline.
  • Hold an ARRT (R), ARRT (RT) or NMTCB imaging credential if you are pursuing the computed tomography discipline.

Key Deadline for Disciplinary Year (Program Phase 2) Application

To be eligible for admission into the advanced medical imaging program’s second and final phase, the discipline year (with its included clinical experiences), you must secure a clinical site and submit your completed application and all application materials by March 1 for fall semester clinical experiences. This deadline is critical so there is ample time to evaluate your application for admission and, if you are accepted into this final phase of the program, for an appropriate clinical site to be approved by the university prior to your first clinical experience course.

Clinical experiences are a capstone of the advanced medical imaging program. These experiences are conducted in your local area, prepare you for licensure exams and give you hands-on experience in the industry. You are expected to find your own clinical site by using resources provided by the program, but the university cannot guarantee the site you find will or can affiliate with the university.

Before You Apply to Our 2-phase Program

Before applying, please watch our on-demand webinar for more information about the Advanced Medical Imaging program. The webinar covers program structure, specializations, clinical requirements, costs and outcomes. Viewing the webinar is required before contacting a Student Success Coach.

After watching the webinar, if you have additional questions, you can speak with a student success coach by calling (208) 426-5921. We’ll walk you through the admissions process, answer questions and discuss potential pathways unique to your goals. Because our program is highly competitive, identifying other pathway options in the event you are not admitted into the final phase of the program is advisable.

Application Process Overview

Step 1: Apply to Boise State University

To apply to the university, you must complete Boise State’s undergraduate application.

  • In the Semester and Major section of the application, indicate you are interested in taking courses “Entirely through online delivery.”
  • In the Semester and Major section of the application, select your academic area of interest from the major drop-down list.
  • If you know which discipline you want to pursue, make your selection from the “Select Discipline Track” options.
Step 2: Submit Official Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from every previous college and university you have attended. If you have served in the military, please submit your Joint Services Transcript and/or Community College of the Air Force transcript.

If you have graduated with a bachelor’s degree, you are only required to submit your official transcript from the accredited college or university that granted your degree. Transcripts from additional colleges or universities where you have earned credit, but not a degree, are not required to apply for admission. However, if you plan to transfer credits for prerequisite courses, you may need to submit additional transcripts to prove that you have completed these courses.

If your degree is from Boise State, you do not need to submit a transcript.

Please note: Official transcripts must be RECEIVED by the admissions office by the application deadline.

Step 3: Enroll as a Pre-Advanced Medical Imaging Student

After being accepted to Boise State University, you will begin the first phase of the program as a pre-advanced medical imaging student. Here, you must successfully complete the following requirements:

  • University Foundations courses (general education)*
  • Prerequisite courses*
  • Associate degree*
  • Advanced medical imaging courses
  • Imaging electives
  • Secure a clinical site

Items marked with an asterisk (*) may be completed through previously earned transfer courses.

The program requires advance written approval from the program director for any exceptions to the requirements above. To seek approval of any exception to the requirements, you must send documentation — which may include official transcripts and a syllabus — to your academic advisor after you have been admitted into the pre-advanced medical imaging phase of the program.

Create a Degree Plan

During the pre-advanced medical imaging phase, you will work closely with your academic advisor to create a degree plan. This plan includes a timeline of when you hope to begin your discipline-specific courses and clinical experience if you are selected for admission to the discipline year phase of the program. It will also determine the deadlines for securing your clinical site and applying for admission to the competitive discipline year phase.

Step 4: Apply to the Competitive Discipline Year

After completing your required prerequisite coursework and securing a clinical placement site, you will apply for admission to the competitive discipline year phase of the program.

To apply for admission to the discipline year phase of the advanced medical imaging program, you must submit the following as part of your application:

  • Confirmed clinical site placement, including an interview
  • Proof of current medical professional credentials, if applicable
  • Resume and statement of purpose outlining any patient care experience

To learn more about these application steps, visit the program resource site in Canvas and access module 12.

Please note: The Canvas program resource site is only accessible to students who have been admitted to the pre-advanced medical imaging phase.
