Application Process

The online Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging, Diagnostic Medical Sonography Discipline is divided into two distinct phases: pre-advanced medical imaging and a discipline year. You must complete the admission requirements for both phases.

Pre-Advanced Medical Imaging

As a pre-advanced medical imaging student, you will complete prerequisite courses and secure a clinical site for your chosen discipline.

To be considered for the pre-advanced medical imaging phase, you must:

Advanced Medical Imaging Discipline Year

The discipline year takes place in your final year of the program. Here, you will be fully admitted to the advanced medical imaging program and complete discipline-specific courses and clinical experiences.

To apply for the discipline year, you must:

• Have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7.
• Have earned a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited institution.
• Complete or in-progress pre-advanced medical imaging courses.
• Have secured a clinical site before the program application deadline.

To be considered for the pre-advanced medical imaging phase, you must apply to Boise State by the application deadline, as shown in the following table.

*Students interested in financial aid are encouraged to apply one month prior to these posted deadlines

Program Application Deadlines

To be eligible for the discipline year and clinical experiences, you must secure a clinical site by March 1 for fall semester clinical experiences.

Clinical experiences are a capstone of the advanced medical imaging program. These experiences are conducted in your local area, prepare you for licensure exams and give you hands-on experience in the industry. You are expected to find and secure your own clinical site by using resources provided by the program.

Application deadlines ensure an appropriate clinical site is approved in time for your first clinical experience course, which happens in your final year of the program.

Courses

To graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging, Diagnostic Medical Sonography Discipline, you must complete at least 120 credits.

You must also have earned — or be in the process of earning — an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science from an accredited institution. These may be previously earned academic credits or transfer courses. These requirements can also be completed as part of the Pre-Advanced Medical Imaging program in lieu of an associate degree.

All major requirements must be completed with C (not C-) or better. You can contact your advisor for more information after you gain admission into the Pre-Advanced Medical Imaging program.

*AMI 302 is only required if you are pursuing the Magnetic Resonance Imaging discipline.

Admission into the advanced medical imaging program does not guarantee clinical placement. Clinical experiences in some disciplines across the country can be highly competitive. After being admitted to Boise State, you will receive access to a resource site with best practices on how to find a clinical site and receive mentoring from our program’s team of experts.

Costs

Boise State Online offers reasonably priced tuition, ongoing support, financial aid options and degree paths that help ensure you reach your goals quickly and efficiently.

Review the following table for program costs.

*The per-credit fees are for the 2025-26 academic year. Future academic year per-credit fees may vary slightly and are finalized each May. Clinical experience courses include a clinical course fee that covers items such as radiation badges, student ID badges, postage and clinical tracking software and will vary depending on the discipline selected.

**Costs for room, board and transportation are used to calculate financial aid and are included to disclose the full cost of attendance. These costs are not required for students pursuing a fully online degree.

Other potential expenses may include a personal computer, webcam, headphones with mic and internet access — all of which are required for this program.

To earn a degree from Boise State University, students must complete 120 credits; 43-46 credits are typically foundation courses. University Foundation courses and costs may vary.
