Light Pollution Resources

Our Light Pollution Ambassadors

The CIDSRSN Light Pollution Ambassadors are UCLA students from the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) led by Dr. Travis Longcore. This is a joint partnership between NASA, The Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve (CIDSR), Boise State University, and the University of California, Los Angeles. The ambassadors investigate sources of skyglow in the CIDSR and develop long-term strategies to track light pollution trends. Each summer, the team spends 10 days in the CIDSR collecting ground measurements. The rest of the year, they use remote observations from VIIRS DNB to quantify and track the progression of light pollution in the CIDSR. Its ease of access and years of available data make it the optimal choice for satellite estimation.
