This series of work was created using a b-mix clay body with grog and decorated using the sgraffito technique. I chose to handbuild five of the pieces, but all of them have an imperfect bottleneck form. I felt that making them handbuilt would aesthetically make them unique and more organic in form.

I chose to represent animals found here in Idaho, specifically, Sandpoint Idaho where I grew up. I created this work to represent my fondness of nature and represent the relationships of animals to each other and to humans. I feel that Sandpoint offers a particular decorative style that is not found in Boise, so by creating this work I hoped to share a subculture that is common in the north.

I also chose the bottleneck vase style to reflect the value of nature as people often are only able to buy nature from a store and place plants in their homes or yards. We often try to surround ourselves with nature, but where I grew up, I never had to think about it. The bottle neck vase is generally man made or requires skill from a potter to create which can make it more expensive. I feel that nature is valuable and difficult to recreate much like the bottleneck vase.
