On Sunday, April 9th, Boise State Music celebrates the retirement, legacy and 33 years of outstanding service of Marcellus Brown, Director of Bands, with the Marcellus Brown “A Legacy Celebration” Concert. The concert takes place at 7:30 pm in the Morrison Center Main Hall.
This special night of music features performances from the University Symphonic Winds, the Treasure Valley Concert Band, and the Alumni Celebration Wind Symphony, comprised entirely of Boise State alumni. It also includes two world premiere performances specially commissioned for the occasion.
The first piece, performed by the University Symphonic Winds, is titled “For Marcellus…” and was composed by William Owens. The piece was a gift from Owens that was inspired by his over 20-year friendship with Brown, which started when one of Owens’ works was performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago by the VanderCook Concert Band with Professor Brown conducting. Professor Brown has been a champion of Owens’ music, and the Boise State University Symphonic Winds have recorded 5 of Owens’ original works for band for the TRN publishing company.
According to his bio, Mr. Owens is “a seasoned music educator” and is “active as a composer, conductor, and clinician throughout the United States.” Owens’ music often appears on required music lists and has been performed at prestigious events such as the Midwest Clinic. Owens has also won a wealth of awards, including the ASCAPlus award, and has twice won the Forrest L. Buchtel Citation for Excellence in Band Composition.
The second world premiere, performed by the Treasure Valley Concert Band, is titled “Through an Open Door” and was composed by Nathan Daughtrey. As a composer, keyboard percussionist, performing artist and clinician, Daughtrey has traveled the world as both a soloist and performer. He has released two solo marimba albums and appeared on several others, including Emma Lou Diemer’s “Pacific Ridge” on her “Concerto in One Movement for Marimba & Orchestra” with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Along with being a composer and keyboard percussionist, Daughtrey is the president and owner of C. Alan Publications, a publishing company specializing in band literature, chamber music, orchestral music and high-level percussion literature.
