Morrison Center Main Hall
Boise Jazz Society is thrilled to present a Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday Extravaganza with Delfeayo Marsalis and his New Orleans’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at 7 p.m. in the Morrison Center Main Hall.
As an acclaimed trombonist, composer, and producer, Delfeayo Marsalis has also dedicated his prolific career to music theatre and education. Along with the Marsalis family of musicians, including his father Ellis, Delfeayo was destined for a life in music. At the age of 17, Marsalis began his career as a producer and has, to date, produced over 120 recordings, garnering one Grammy award and several nominations. In 2008, he formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, a highly entertaining ensemble that focuses on maintaining important jazz traditions such as riff playing, New Orleans polyphony and spontaneous arrangements.
Tickets range from $45-65, plus ticketing fee, and are available via the Morrison Center Box Office or their website. Everyone, regardless of age, needs a ticket for entry. Parking is included with the purchase of a ticket.
Defeayo and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra will also perform Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. for a special educational event titled Swinging with the Cool School! This event is free to Treasure Valley students of all ages, their band directors and chaperones.
In 2008, Delfeayo founded the educational program Swinging with the Cool School, which was used as an experimental form of music therapy at the New Orleans Children’s Hospital. He has composed over 90 songs that help introduce kids to jazz through musical theatre and has reached over 5,000 students nationally with his Swinging with the Cool School soft introduction to jazz workshops.
The Cool School has since expanded to introduce live instrumental jazz to students around the country, with the intent of helping young people develop a relationship with a piece of American music that has gradually disappeared from mainstream radio and media at large. Through these performances, UJO is able to introduce students (and adults) to the wide emotional range of instrumental music.
