Idaho Dance Theatre wishes to thank our supporters: Boise City Department of Arts and History, Boise City, Boise State School of the Arts, Focus Physical Therapy, ChelseyDesign and the Boise State Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing.
The dance film “Silhouette” premieres alongside the dances presented by Idaho Dance Theatre. Marla Hansen, professor of dance; Rulon Wood, associate professor of film and television; and Alex Sjobeck, adjunct professor of jazz and piano collaborated on the film which included Boise State students who shot and edited the project. “Silhouette” represents the strong collaboration and experiential learning opportunities for students among disciplines within the Boise State School of the Arts.
Sjobeck writes on the theme of the film, “This project aims to draw attention to the ubiquitous theme that members of society have to masquerade in order to blend in, anxiously minimizing aspects of their own identity in order to avoid judgment. Everyone has an opinion, a personal story, or a part of their identity that will inevitably spark conflict with another person. Our lives are constantly on display in today’s world of social media, and an individual constantly risks confrontation simply for being themselves. People are forced to sacrifice the potential for community in one aspect of their being for the acceptance of community at large. In the end, they suffer alone in matters of mental health, abuse, religion, sexual identity, politics, and more recently opinions on health like vaccines. Silhouette represents the ironic struggle of us all facing individually a communal fear.”
