2019-2020 Scholarship Recipients

The Boise State University College of Health Sciences and School of Social Work are committed to awarding scholarships usually based on academic merit, need, or exceptional talent. We are delighted to announce the recipients of the 2019-2020 scholarships and awards sponsored by the college, school, and generous benefactors.

The Dan Huff Memorial Scholarship Fund in Social Work

Nicole Todd
MSW Full Program
Ms. Todd is a 2nd year MSW student, focusing her studies on medical and clinical social work. After graduation, she plans to work in the field of medical and clinical social work and with aspirations of obtaining her Ph.D. Ms. Todd’s ultimate career goals are to explore, find, and promote effective healthcare practices and policies in the field of medical social work as it applies to Medicare and veteran patients. Ms. Todd is grateful for this scholarship because it recognizes her hard work and commitment to the field of social work, is helping pay for her education, and is allowing her to pursue her passions.


Irene Wilcox Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Fabiola Mendez
BSW Senior

Ms. Mendez is entering her senior in the BSW program. Ms. Mendez’s professional plans are to obtain an MSW upon graduation and work with sexual and domestic abuse victims. This scholarship allows Ms. Mendez to focus on her last year without having to work full-time.


Irene Wilcox Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Lexy Wilson
MSW Full Program
Ms. Wilson is entering her 2nd year in the MSW program. During her advanced-standing practicum, she will obtain experience in the field of medical social work. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in the field of medical and international social work while simultaneously working towards her clinical endorsement. She also wishes to pursue her Ph.D. in the future. Ms. Wilson is incredibly grateful for the Irene Wilcox Memorial Award, as it will help her achieve her goals.


The Keith Gramann Memorial Scholarship

Brenda Rangel-Arriaga
BSW Senior
Ms. Rangel-Arriaga is a senior in the BSW program. Upon completion of her BSW degree, she plans to attend graduate school to earn her Master’s Degree in Social Work. Ms. Rangel-Arriaga is passionate about working with the immigrant and refugee populations, and hopes to continue working with these populations as a social worker. She is extremely grateful and honored to receive the Keith Gramann Memorial Scholarship, as it will help her accomplish her goals.


The Milt & Maxine Klein Idaho Society for Clinical Social Work Endowed Scholarship

Melisa McTaggert
MSW Full Program – Online
Ms. McTaggert will graduate from the online MSW program in December of 2019. She volunteers as guardian ad litem working with children in the foster care system. Upon graduation, Ms. McTaggert plans to continue her work with foster care children and their families. Ms. McTaggert is honored to receive The Milt & Maxine Klein Idaho Society for Clinical Social Work Endowed Scholarship, which will undoubtedly help her achieve her academic goals.

Alisha Smith
BSW Senior
Ms. Smith is a senior in the BSW program. She is undecided how she would like to use her social work degree, but the social work program has helped her gain a love for everything that has to do with social work. Ms. Smith would like to experience social work in many different work environments to discover what best suits her and her abilities. Ms. Smith, a mother of four children, is very grateful for this scholarship, as it will help her to achieve her academic goals.

Carla Velez
BSW Senior
Ms. Velez is a senior year in the BSW program. Following graduation, she plans to enroll in the MSW program.  Although Ms. Velez wants to work in a healthcare setting as a medical social worker and interpreter, she believes that there are several other opportunities to explore and populations to serve in the social work professional. This scholarship will help reduce her financial burden as she pursues her career.

Carrie Voss
BSW Senior
Ms. Voss is a senior in the BSW program. After Ms. Voss earns her BSW, she aspires to earn her MSW and clinical license. She desires to work in the field of intimate partner violence and abuse, and to advocate for victims and survivors. She has learned that there is no limit to what she can do and the people she can help. Ms. Voss is grateful to be a recipient of this scholarship, which will reduce her financial stress.

Laura Mattiesen
BSW Senior
Ms. Mattiesen is a senior in the BSW program and is earning a minor in psychology. She would like to become a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in Eating Disorders and Personality Disorders. Ms. Mattiesen is grateful for receiving this scholarship, as it will allow her to focus on her studies and raising her daughter without the added anxiety of financial stress.

Perla Ceja
BSW Senior
Ms. Ceja is a senior in the BSW program. Her professional plan for the future is to become a Child Protective Service social worker. As a first-generation college student, Ms. Ceja seeks to help others in need. This scholarship will help her attain her professional goal and she is very grateful to be its recipient.


The Amerigroup Washington Online Master’s of Social Work Scholarship

Jamee Homuth
MSW Full Program – Online
Ms. Homuth, a single parent, is in her second year of the online MSW program. She wishes to pursue her MSW in the future. Ms. Homuth’s professional plans include advocating for individuals and families living with disabilities as well as working with communities to improve the visibility, rights, and access to services of this population. She is delighted to receive the 2019-2020 scholarship, as it will support her full-time enrollment in the MSW program.


The Amerigroup Washington Online Master’s of Social Work Scholarship

Carrie Beck
MSW Full Program – Online
Ms. Beck is currently enrolled in the MSW program. In the future, she plans to obtain her clinical licensure and have her own practice working with athletes. As a former Division I collegiate athlete, Ms. Beck is aware of how underserved athletes are surrounding their mental health, and wants to provide advocacy in that capacity. She would like to support athletes holistically through yoga, Emotional Freedom Technique, as well as providing relevant resources and therapy. This scholarship is such an incredible gift that allows Ms. Beck to pursue her goals and excel in her field.
