Participated in projects funded by a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of
Child Health and Human Development, led by Jay Teachman and Lucky Tedrow, Department of
Sociology, Center for Social Science Instruction/Demographic Research Laboratory. Collaborated
on research, attended conferences, and published research findings in a journal or poster format.

Under the supervision of Dr. Alexes Harris. Proofread and edited final drafts and updated all
bibliographic material for Dr. Harrisโ€™ recent publication, โ€œA Pound of Flesh: Monetary Sanctions
as Punishment for the Poor.โ€ Drafted and submitted Institutional Review Board documents and
negotiated IRB requests for the in-progress research project on marijuana markets in Seattle.
Organized and directed participating undergraduate researchers to begin preliminary data
collection, including business and individual recruitment, as well as one-on-one interviews
sessions.

Assisting the advising office with all clerical and organizational needs, including copying, filing,
scanning, mail distribution, event planning and implementation, photo-day, and maintenance of
the UWCEE blog (posting job opportunities, upcoming events, etc.). Used basic advising programs
(Electronic Academic Records System and Keynes Student Database) to assist with new and
continuing major files.

Met and corresponded individually with sociology majors and prospective majors on matters
related to academic progress, major requirements, career planning, etc. Assisted with the
organization and administration of the Office of Student Services events, including quarterly new
major orientations and the annual Sociology graduation ceremony. Coordinated with and
assisted other staff members in the Office of Student Services to ensure excellent service
provisions for students, faculty, and other staff members. Referred students to relevant
department and extra-departmental resources for additional support. Maintained the Sociology
Department Blog, with weekly postings and a weekly e-newsletter to keep students informed of
current events, courses, and jobs and internships relevant to sociology. Basic office duties
(scanning, copying, writing letters of recommendation, staff meetings, minutes, etc.).

Temporary staff position where I updated, organized, and refreshed the affiliated faculty pages
on the CSSS website. Updated the PhD completion spreadsheets with current information on the
website vs. faculty websites, downloaded pictures and modified, then uploaded to the current
website. Created spreadsheets with historical enrollments for CSSS.

Created and maintained a webpage for the Freshwater/Mountain to Sea Initiative group within
the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Created distinct pages within the host

General office duties, including answering multi-line phones, scheduling appointments, arranging
travel and flights/flight transport, ordering plaques and framing, note-taking/minutes, mail
duties, and other general errands. Processing and tracking donations from the Sun Valley
Company to local organizations in the community, Idaho, and other parts of the country. Reside
on the Dorm Committee to help plan and create employee bill of rights, housing agreements,
rules and regulations, and other logistics of the new employee housing for 2018. Create and
maintain a master calendar of events, dining and recreational hours, and operations for the
resort each week. Understanding of general office equipment and programs (Microsoft Office,
Google Documents, Outlook), printing on various size paper/cards/envelopes, scanning, copying,
etc.

CURRENT AND PREVIOUS RESEARCH

โ€ข Participated in projects regarding the investigation of the short- and long-term effects of military
service on the lives of young men and women using data from the National Longitudinal Survey
of Youth, 1997. This project was funded by a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National
Institute of Child Health and Human Development, led by Jay Teachman and Lucky Tedrow,
Department of Sociology, Center for Social Science Instruction/Demographic Research Laboratory
at Western Washington University
โ€ข MA Thesis research on the effects of military service on the life course, looking specifically at
drug use, and whether or not any gender differences are prevalent. This project was a
quantitative approach to analyzing military service.
โ€ข Early data gathering, IRB application, and miscellaneous research assistant duties with Dr. Alexes
Harris and several other graduate and undergraduate students, focusing on the changing
legalization of the marijuana market and its effects on consumers and sellers in all markets
(recreational, medical, legal), particularly for people of color. June 2015 through June 2016.
โ€ข Principle Investigator for the Military Life UW Study (dissertation research). Involvement in all
stages, including creating materials for IRB submission (confidentiality agreements, materials,
etc.), interview protocol and survey questionnaires (and implementation in online form via
Google Forms), preliminary testing, recruitment (poster and business card creation, distribution
of flyers in person across Washington State and online via social media, selection of
counties/towns and locations to distribute to), one-on-one interviews in person and via videocalling,
data analysis both qualitative and quantitative, coding, supervision of undergraduate
student research team, and writing three linked-journal articles based on findings. Successful
completion of Dissertation Prospectus Defense (12/2016) and Final Defense (5/2018).
