Rebecca L. Som Castellano joined the faculty of the Sociology Department in 2013.  She earned her Ph.D. in Rural Sociology at The Ohio State University, her M.A. in Sociology from the University of Kentucky and her B.A. in interdisciplinary studies from Fairhaven College at Western Washington University.  Her areas of expertise include rural sociology; the sociology of food and agriculture; gender and development; and stratification.  Her dissertation examined the gendered division of labor in food provisioning for those engaged in alternative agriculture and food initiatives.  Previous research projects have included examination of the actors and interests involved in the construction and development of National School Lunch Program policy; stratification and agrifood system concerns; and barriers to engaging in the alternative agriculture and food initiatives.  For her work, she has been awarded several national awards, including a USDA National Needs Fellowship, a Rural Sociological Society Thesis Award, as well as a Coca Cola Critical Difference for Women Award.  She has presented at a number of national and international conferences, including the American Sociological Association, the Rural Sociological Society, the International Studies Association and the European Society for Rural Sociology.  Her current work focuses on understanding social responses to the changing agriculture and food system, and the efficacy of alternative agriculture and food initiatives, particularly in regards to achieving improved social and environmental justice.
