Sarah Mawhirter joined the faculty of the Sociology Department in 2011. She earned a B.S. in Sociology and a M.A. in History from Boise State University and a M.St. in Women’s Studies from Oxford University in England. Her graduate theses focused on the historical and political implications of “feminist” sex workers in the United States.  Her areas of interest include stratification, the history of social movements in the United States, and the study of cultural transformation.

Prior to joining the faculty of the Sociology Department in 2011, Sarah spent four years as Chair for the Women’s Studies Department at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California. In this role, she was also the Director of Women’s Programs, a student service organization. She has created and taught courses on social problems, women in Idaho and politics, gender and communication in the mediation process, masculinities, and most recently, the uses of administrative segregation in U.S. prisons.
