In this series, we ask Public Health and Population Science (PHPS) students to tell us a little about their internship experience and share what was the best part.

Major

B.S. in Health Studies, HIIM Emphasis, with a Minor in Business.

Internship Role

Health Informatics Intern at Saint Alphonsus Health System.

What were some of your projects?

Creating scheduling templates for St. Al’s physicians, running reports to make sure no patient appointments were lost during the schedule alterations, providing analysis, functional support, and maintenance of software applications and assisting in troubleshooting employee issues.

What was the highlight of your internship?

While HIIM dips into many different health system ‘buckets’ I have always had a particular interest in quality assurance and patient safety – two areas of focus that [my favorite project] happened to revolve around. It allowed me to better understand and appreciate how the ‘background’ departments in health care work together to ensure patient safety and a positive patient experience through the continuum of care.
