Cynthia Curl earned her Ph.D. in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences from the University of Washington in 2014 and joined the School of Public and Population Health at Boise State University in the spring of 2015. Curl is also the director for the Center for Excellence in Environmental Health & Safety for Boise State.

Curl’s research is focused on the intersection between agriculture and human health, and her primary interests are in assessing human exposure to agricultural pesticides and improving health and safety in agricultural workplaces. Prior to her doctoral training, she worked as a researcher for the Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center, and in both the private and non-profit sectors as an environmental consultant and scientist.

Curl founded and directs Boise State’s Agricultural Health Lab. Current projects in her lab include a randomized intervention to assess the effect of an organic diet on pesticide exposure during pregnancy, an investigation into crop uptake of inorganic bromide following field fumigation with methyl bromide, and a collaboration with Washington and Idaho Potato Commissions to improve worker health and safety during Northwest potato production.

Throughout her academic training, Curl has earned several honors and awards, including the prestigious Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowship from the Environmental Protection Agency, which supported her doctoral research, and the Magnuson Scholar Award, awarded each year to the top student in each of the Health Sciences Schools at the University of Washington. She was recently named one of the 20 Pioneers under 40 in Environmental Public Health by the Collaborative on Health & Environment and was a coauthor on a Lancet article named Best Paper of 2016 by the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology.
