Recycling FAQs

How can you tell a plastic item is a #1 or #2?

Look for the chasing arrows symbol (recycling logo) at the base or on the bottom of the item. It should have either a number 1 in the triangle of chasing arrows with the letters “PET” below the triangle, or a number 2 in the triangle of chasing arrows with the letters “HDPE” below the triangle.

What about bottle caps and lids?

Bottle caps are okay to leave on, but lids to jugs and jars must be removed and thrown away.

What about the old signage?

They are outdated and we are in the process of removing them and replacing them.

Why can’t I recycle crinkly plastic water bottles?

The lightweight, crinkly plastic water bottles get flattened and then sorted with the paper. This contaminates our paper recycling.

Why can’t recyclables be bagged?

Plastic bags or film get tangled in the mechanical sorting machine. This means the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) must shut everything down and pull them out by hand.

Who do I contact if I need a new recycling bin or if my recycling wasn’t picked up?

Please email svcreqs@boisestate.edu or call (208) 426-1409 with your request.
