Johnna Evans is one of the top gymnasts in the history of Boise State University. She earned second team NCAA All-America honors as a senior in 1998 when she placed 13th in the all-around at the national championships with a score of 39.225. A walk-on when she joined the team in 1994 as a freshman, Evans quickly earned a scholarship and was named the Big West Conference Gymnast of the Year in 1996 and 1998. She was the all-around champion at the conference meet as a sophomore in 1996, and went on to place ninth in the vault at the NCAA West Region. As a junior, she won the vault at the league meet and went on to place third at regionals. Evans set what was then the school record in the all-around as a senior at a meet on Feb. 27, 1998, when she scored a 39.55. Prior to earning her All-America award in 1998, Evans finished fourth on the bars and sixth in the all-around at the NCAA regional meet. Evans also excelled in the classroom at Boise State, earning academic All-Big West Conference and National Coaches Association National Scholar Athlete honors. The success Evans accomplished in the gym and classroom helped her earn the 1998 NCAA Woman of the Year award for the state of Idaho, and a NCAA post-graduate scholarship.
