COAS Graduate Assistant Support Program

This program is intended to support and grow graduate education and research and creative activity at Boise State University across the College of Arts and Sciences through recruitment, retention, and completion efforts.

Eligible Requests

Proposals for GA funding should include one or more of the following:

  • A one-year GA stipend that allows for recruitment of new and exceptional students to Boise State. Graduate programs have to provide a funding plan with evidence that continued funding will be available for the duration of the graduate program. This funding may come from another GA line, from research funds, or other departmental/program funds.
  • Awards that attract or leverage investments by others in support of research and creative activity. Examples include tuition waivers when those are not an allowable cost in a research grant.
  • Awards that support degree completion by existing graduate students. This is allowable only when extenuating circumstances have slowed progress to degree completion, and requires students to make good progress towards degree completion when these funds have been awarded. No more than one semester of support will be provided.
  • Funds designated as insurance for graduate students’ support pending from other external sources, such as scholarships or grant proposals. No more than one year of support will be provided.

To Apply

Complete the COAS GA Support program application and upload a one-page proposal including:

  1. The type of request that the GA funding will support. Be sure to refer to the list of acceptable requests outlined above.
  2. A justification to support the request.
  3. The amount of funding requested. Note that the stipend amount should equal the GA stipend amount in the Graduate Program for which the support is requested. Please provide separate budget lines for the stipend, tuition, and health insurance.
  4. A justification for the duration of the funding requested.
  5. A funding plan, indicating how the graduate student will be supported financially beyond the GA funding provided through this program.

Application Deadline

There are four application deadlines throughout the year: April 5th, 2024; June 14th, 2024; September 13th, 2024; and January 8th, 2025. Applications will be reviewed within 14 days.

Submission Details

Please complete the COAS GA Support Program Application to request funding. The request can be made by full-time graduate faculty and requires approval by the graduate program coordinator/director of the program and chair of the faculty’s home department.

Alignment with program and graduate college admission processes

For new incoming students, funding will be contingent on a favorable review of the student’s application materials by the graduate program committee, and by the graduate college. If your request for GA funding has been approved, please be prepared to provide the following information prior to receiving funding:

  1. A positive graduate program vote for admission with GA support for the student.
  2. Successful admission into the Graduate College at Boise State upon approval by the Dean of the Graduate College, Dr. Scott Lowe.
