Student-Managed Investment Fund

Real money. Real investments. Real experience.

Using money real money in the college’s student-managed investment funds, students do research, estimate returns and risks and experiment with different investment strategies and then the students decide how to allocate the funds’ portfolio.

The classes that use the funds are Asset Allocation and Security Solution (FINAN 460) and Portfolio Performance Measurement (FINAN 461). These are two of the most popular and valued classes in the Department of Finance. Students have grown the initial contributions from donors to more than $300K held in three funds.

Students seeking a career in investing will receive no better career preparation experience than this program. They put their knowledge and skills to the test by managing an investment portfolio of real money. Earnings from the funds are used to sustain the program, support student scholarships and conference travel.

After completing a class, students will have an e-portfolio they can show potential employers. The e-portfolio shows examples of students’ work with real-world applications.

COBE the Impact Investing Fund, one of the student-manage funds, was created in 2018 and seeks to deliver both robust financial returns and positive social impact. At the beginning of each year, students will research the current social impact investment landscape and formulate their own definition of impact investing. Under the tutelage of finance faculty members and advisement of top industry experts in impact investing, students will gain firsthand experience in a growing sector and develop tools to understand the financial goals and personal values of future clients.
