CE 497 Introduction to Numerical Methods for the Geosciences Flores

At the end of this class students will be able to apply modern scientific programming and problem-solving skills and tools to address Earth System Science challenges of national and international significance. The course is oriented towards contemporary best practices of scientific computing including the use of community and open source software, documenting workflows, managing data using standard file formats and metadata, version control, and reproducibility. Cross-listed with GEOS 505, this is a lab. Permission of instructor needed.

CE 497 Applied Hydrologic Modeling Flores

Review, critical analysis, and application of surface hydrology modeling techniques used in hydrology and engineering practice. Covers empirical, statistical, and physics-based approaches. Application of commonly used modeling software to practical problems. Cross-listed with GEOS 518. Permission of instructor needed.

CE 497/597 Advanced Soil Mechanics Chittoori

This course focusses on providing students with an advanced level of understanding in soil behavior. It considers the following topics: Soil mineralogy, Soil composition (test Methods and its effects on engineering properties), Soil fabric and its relation soil properties, Advanced discussion on shear strength, Advanced discussion on consolidation, Basics of constitutive modeling as applied to soil mechanics, Soil constitutive models with strong focus on Critical State Soil Mechanics, Introduction to unsaturated soil mechanics Prerequisite: CE 360 or permission of instructor.

CE 597 Finite Elements Method Farid

Algorithm and code development to numerically solve any problem governed by partial differential equations using the finite-element method. Examples problems range from flow, heat transfer, stress analysis, wave propagation, and more, prerequisite: CE 402/502 or permission of instructor.

CE 597 Introduction to Nano and Micro Mechanics Lu

This course will focus on the theoretical basis to understand the behavior of nanoscale multiparticle atomistic systems; fundamentals for quantitative, rigorous analysis of the overall response and failure modes of microstructurally heterogeneous solids. Special emphasis will be placed on basic concepts quantitatively characterizing the microstructure of heterogeneous materials. Theory of elasticity and general homogenization techniques, to obtain parameters describing the overall mechanical properties of heterogeneous solids and composites, in terms of corresponding microstructure. The objective is to provide students a general overview of the principals about mechanical properties of engineering materials at the nano to micro-scale which results in quality materials design and precise prediction of performance during the service life. PREREQ: CE 350 or permission of instructor.

CE 597 REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN Hamilton

Design of reinforced concrete structures, such as beams, columns, one-way slabs, and simple footings, in accordance with the latest ACI Code for Reinforced Concrete. PREREQ: CE 352 or permission of instructor.
