Strategies for learning (and thriving) at home

Well, it’s been an interesting two weeks. We’ve adapted an entire curriculum to online delivery in a matter of days. And while you’ve been adapting to being at home during spring break, we’ve been working to apply what we learned that last week to make our offerings even better. It will still be a challenge, but we know that – working together – we can give you a quality experience in the weeks remaining.

I want to share with you a few things that many people are doing that may help you with your situation right now. Consider trying to create a routine that helps you compartmentalize your day so things don’t creep together and lose focus.

Structure a daily schedule of defined times for:

  • School time – Working on your classes. Try to use your previous class times to keep you on track. It’s tempting to sneak in an episode of The View, but don’t make it a habit where you lose your momentum. And set up a specific space that is for school and study only; that way you can walk away and keep your other life activities separated.
  • Workout – Make sure you get some fresh air and exercise. Schedule a daily walk. Work in the yard. Convert your garage into a gym. Follow online workout routines. And follow a healthy diet. Your physical fitness feeds your mental and emotional fitness.
  • Family time – Playing with the kids. Calling your parents. Cooking dinner together. This can be a stressful time, and keeping our relationships strong and healthy will help.
  • Me time – Read a book. Meditate. Listen to music. Just take some time for yourself. And if you feel overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to talk to someone. If you need a resource, try the University Counseling Center.
  • Social & Community – Check on your elderly neighbors. Create virtual happy hours with friends. Remember that you don’t have to socially isolate while you physically isolate.

It’s important to build a routine into your day like the above to maintain your sanity. We wish you the best over the days and weeks ahead and remind you that you are part of our COEN family.
