Position: Undergraduate Research Assistant

Smart Materials and Systems Laboratory (SMSL)

End Date: Summer 2024 (renewal based on performance)

Research Scope

The student will work together with researchers from Idaho National Laboratory and develop a test rig to evaluate linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) inside nuclear reactors. Job responsibilities include:

  • Use SolidWorks to design a test rig to characterize the thermal expansion in LVDTs
  • Simulate the LVDT performance at high temperatures using finite element software
  • Complete test rig assembly and data collection at Idaho National Laboratory

Job Description

(Training will be provided)

  • Be a sophomore or junior undergraduate
  • Ability to commit at 10-40 hours per week in the laboratory uninterrupted
  • Currently owns or has a plan to get the machine shop tags
  • Familiar with SolidWorks

Hours:
Part-time during Spring/Fall semesters (>15 hours/week)
Full-time in Summer (20-40 hours/week)

Pay rate: $12-$20/hour
