Computing Ph.D. student Golam Mortuza recently accepted an internship offer from Facebook Inc. He will be working with the Marketplace discovery team at the Menlo Park, CA campus beginning in the summer of 2021. The team focuses on providing better recommendations and ranking systems for local classifieds, jobs, and E-commerce on Marketplace and the Facebook shops mall. A better ranking and recommendations system helps users discover commerce content and grow specialized commerce on Facebook through various channels like Marketplace Fee, Newsfeed, Groups, Notifications, and more. The market place is one of the core Facebook features and is used by approximately 1 Billion users each day. The team leverages Machine Learning(ML)/Deep Learning(DL) technology to enhance the user experience in various areas.

Mortuza is excited to work with a company like Facebook, which has a global impact and thinks this is a perfect opportunity to gain more experience with state-of-the-art Machine Learning models at the industry level. Mortuza expects this internship will help him to gain valuable work experience with handling large-scale data and will propel his career in the Machine Learning industry as well as his Ph.D. research.

Mortuza is a current Computing Ph.D. student in the Computer Science emphasis and is working on the Nucleic Acid Memory (NAM) project as a research assistant under the supervision of Dr. Tim Andersen. The NAM project is focused on storing digital information in DNA using Machine learning, image processing, and error correction algorithms.
